The Journey Begins...

We start in the book of 1st Peter.

In this first chapter we ask you to read it carefully, thoroughly searching for what's happening deep within the text. This text was not written to any one person or church, but as you read in the first two lines, it is written to all the believers who have been chased out and scattered after the death of Jesus.

As you read through this chapter imagine how it must have felt - Having a sense of community being so close to Jesus in one moment and then the next to be running for your life from persecution, fearing death at almost every turn.

Notice during this chapter how Peter speaks of concepts, like trials, joy and hope, and brings into the light the thought material things won't be with us forever. Some things, though, will be with us forever and it's those things that truly matter.

Keep this in your hearts this week as you continue to read and discuss this chapter with friends. Let these scriptures move you to meaningful thought and conversation. It's our desire and prayer that we all grow in our walk with Christ through this experience.

The part of the chapter that stuck out to me was verse 6.
    Verse 6 (NASB):
... you have been distressed by various trials, so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

This verse stuck out to me because I have been going through a kinda rough time, and this reminded me that sometimes we go through certain tests and trials as a way to increase our faith.

    1 Peter 2:9 CEV
"But you are God’s chosen and special people. You are a group of royal priests and a holy nation. God has brought you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Now you must tell all the wonderful things that he has done."

Sometimes I get too caught up in being thankful for all the wonderful things God has done in my life, that I forget about others and how I should be sharing his love with them. It's something that I really want to work on.

  5. 1 Peter 1:2 "who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by his blood:
Grace and peace be yours in abundance."

He's chosen us, and acknowledging that is incredible. Who else would have chosen a dirty sinner, only God would have the love and compassion to do that. Not only has he chosen us but he gave us Jesus, so that we can have his grace and peace. He is so good, and I feel like we need to continuously acknowledge that.

This totally relates to my life, because with everything going on the world makes you feel worthless, but God has showed me that he chose me, that is so beautiful and incredible.

  6. 1 Peter 1 : 22-25
v.25 "'...But the word of the Lord endures forever.' Now this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you." (NKJV)

I think my favorite part of the chapter was this, the assurence that God is forever. Everything else may fail or fade away. You may have trials and hard times in your life. But God is always there with you, and He will never fail.

1 Peter chapter 1 verses 6-9 really spoke to me. (NIV) 6. "In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 7. These have come so that your faith- of greater worth that gold, which perishes even though refined by fire- may be proved genuine and is revealed. 8. Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy. 9. For you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls." This just reaffirms the fact that we will have to face difficulties in our walk w/Christ, but that these trials will strengthen our faith, and it will be proved genuine.

    1 Peter 1:8 says,
"Though you have not seen him,you love him;and even though you do not see him now,you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy."

That stuck out to me because, its 100% true.
we believe and love God even though we have never seen him.
and that's whats so awesome about the whole thing.and yes sometimes i wonder how can their be a God that loves us and sent his son to die for us when we don't deserve it.but then i look around and see all of the awesome things he has created.God is awesome:)

    1 peter 1:15-16,
"but just as he who called you is holy,so be holy in all you do; for it is written:"be holy, because i am holy."

    i understand what it means.
we are supposed to be holy as God is holy.
but the thing i don't really understand is,how are we supposed to be holy when we are so far from being perfect?
